SPLITTING, SURPRISES AND A SERVING SPOON

Spent the day exploring my recently acquired sycamore logs. Had a nice surprise to see that one log had beautiful spalting right through. Using both hand tools and machinery like a bandsaw and sanding belt I am able to really utilise the most of the wood. If I had just my axe and saw I probably would have wasted quite a lot. You can see in the picture the tools I used on the left (minus the bandsaw), in the middle what I have produced and on the right the waste (kindling for the fire). Who knows, maybe one day I'll be skilled enough to have these result with just hand tools. Of course I couldn't go the whole day without making something. So a simple serving spoon was born. Sycamore is a real pleasure to work with! The greener log was still quite fresh and it was a battle to split it open. Chipped my axe and my mallet has got some battle scars but I can see some really nice kuksa cups coming out of this piece. All in all a nice Friday. Have a good weekend everyone :)
